BIO LOOK HERE: Cell Membrane and Transport Links

ASSIGNMENT 1

THIS ASSIGNMENT SHOULD TAKE AT LEAST 30 MINUTES!  If you think you are done in less than 30 minutes, visit additional sites from the list.  Make sure you summarize your learning from each site you visit.

Thoroughly view/interact with at least one of these sites (more than one is better).  Write a learning summary and/or take notes to show me. (This can be in your notebook)  Include the website number (#1-8 below) AND the secrect code word for your class.  Be observant on this page and you will find it...

  1. http://media.pearsoncmg.com/bc/bc_0media_bio/bioflix/bioflix.htm?c7emembrane Excellent animation and text/information on cell membrane and cell transport.  Try the slide show or animation.  May or may not take a while to buffer, but worth it.  In the slide show, look for the arrows at the bottom in order to move on to the next slide. (*They are hard to see on the first slide but they are there.)
  2. http://www.wisc-online.com/Objects/ViewObject.aspx?ID=ap1101 Click and make your own cell membrane.  (Must follow directions)
  3. http://www.wiley.com/college/boyer/0470003790/animations/membrane_transport/membrane_transport.htm  Interactive site about cell transport through the membrane.  What goes through and how…
  4. http://www.teachersdomain.org/asset/tdc02_int_membraneweb/  What goes through the membrane and how, with other information and animation
  5. http://www.johnkyrk.com/cellmembrane.html Lots of details
  6. http://www.susanahalpine.com/anim/Life/memb.htm  No sound, but good info.
  7. http://www.sciencegamecenter.org/games/cell-defense-the-plasma-membrane  Play a game to fix a cell membrane!
  8. http://biomanbio.com/GamesandLabs/Cellgames/celldefense.html  Quiz yourself on the Membrane Structure Challenge!

Assignment 2  Cell Transport

For this assignment, you will need to have a data table (9 rows x 4 columns should work)

For each of the 8 substances listed, state: 1) whether it uses active or passive transport to get in/out of the cell 2) what specific type of transport it uses and 3) why it uses that kind of transport.  DO NOT GUESS! THERE ARE CORRECT ANSWERS!!!  THERE ARE LINKS INCLUDED BELOW TO HELP YOU.

Substances:  water, carbon dioxide, and oxygen, lipids or lipid-based molecules, glucose or other sugars, ions (like Ca+2, Na+ ,K+, and Cl-), protein, bacteria,

For example:

Here is an example of the table and one row of information:

Substance Type of Transport (Active or Passive) Specific type of transport (osmosis, diffusion, facilitated diffusion through protein channel, ion pump, endocytosis, exocytosis...) Reason (Why this type of transport is/must be used for this substance)
Water Passive Osmosis Water is a very small molecule; it can sneak between lipid tails and it can freely diffuse through protein channels
Carbon dioxide
Oxygen
Lipids or lipid-based molecules
Glucose (or other simple sugars)
Ions (like Ca2+, Na+, K+, Cl-)
Protein
Bacteria

RESOURCES

  • Information can be found at almost all of the above websites.
  • Your online textbook (Section 2.2, Section 3.3, Section 3.4 and Section 3.5) will also have helpful information.  Don't stop there - click on "Student Resources" or "Student Premium."  From these locations you can view videos, interactive media and virtual labs to help understand these concepts further!
  • Also, see this link on my website: Cellular Transport: Osmosis, Diffusion and More!

The information IS there, but you will have to pay attention and read.  All students who want to and work hard can get 100% on this assignment.

If you are here for the homework assignment from Monday 11/3/14, congratulations.  Check out some sites and complete some activities.  Write a summary of at least one website/your interaction with it/what you learned in your notebook.  Y ou will also need the secret code word for your hour:

CODE WORDS:

1st hour:  Ham

3rd hour: Jam

5th hour: Eggs
